Current Page: Bat Islands
| The Bat Islands are located about 30 nautical miles north of
Flamingo Beach, Costa Rica. They are officially a part of
Costa Rica's National Park System (Santa Elana National Park). |
|
Below are some of our more exciting and best memories of our trips to the Bat
Islands, located about 30 miles north of the Marina Flamingo. The captions under
each photo will tell you the time of year, therefore you can get an idea of the
variations in wind with repect to the months. Normally Late December
through March you can count on 20 to 50 knots of wind. The other months
will be mild but modified by local squalls during the rainy season (heaviest in
September and October).

Between the Islands and Pta Elena, Isla Pedada in front. Climb to the top of Isla Cocinero View From Top of Isla Cocinero
We rounded Pta Elena and headed into the slot between the point and the Bat Islands About a 45 degree climp to the top. Under many of the clumps of grass were holes - Iguana homes! Anchored in the bay in front of the ranger station, we hiked to the top of Isla Cocinero(50 meters altitude). Top left is the north corner of Isla San Jose. Top right is Cabo Santa Elena. Lots of Iguanas but no people for miles and miles. Check out the snorkeling in the bay! View from top of Isla Cocinero looking NE at Isla Pedada and the Santa Rosa National Park. View from Olies Point (Potrero Grande) Good to eat but tough to clean. The skin is tough and will dull the best of knives. Shannon was the mother-ship for 4 guys that wanted to fish for 4 days at the Bat Islands. We took a 32 foot sportfisher "Osprey" and Shannon. They relaxed, slept and ate aboard Shannon and fished from the Osprey. A perfect combination. With Shannon's freezer and watermaker, we were able to offer comfortable accomadations and even cleaned and froze their fish.

2: BAT ISLAND Trip, January 2004
Half way to the Bat Islands, wind 20 - 28 knots PORT TACK IN FRONT OF THE BAT ISLANDS BIG WAVES AROUND THE POINT
January 20th, 21st and 22nd we made a trip from Flamingo Marina, Costa Rica to the Bat Islands located 1 mile west of Pta Elena (a distance of about 30 miles). The purpose of the trip was to find some good winds and exploring. We were not disapointed. The closer we sailed to the Bat Islands, the more wind we encountered. Just as we arrived at the Bat Islands, the winds dropped and we had a beautiful sunset and great night at anchorage. As we were sailing to the Bats, we caught a Bonita (not a good eating fish). We saved it for bait and in the night Carlos baited a hand line and dropped it over for the night. When we awakened we had a nice Pargo (Red Snapper). Great for dinner! The following day we left the Bat Islands and headed for Bahia Elena. The winds were from the NE, blowing an average 25 knots and gusting to 30. We were on a port tac and were running for Pta. Elena. The Bat Islands were directly off our starboard beam. . As we rounded the point, winds and wave height increased (gusts to over 50 knots). It was getting late and we still had a ways to go. We decided to leave Bahia Elena for another trip and returned to Olies Point for the final nights anchorage.
