INTRODUCTION

The Shannon Sailing School is the first sailing school located in Costa Rica. The School is based out of Flamingo Beach, on the north west coast of Costa Rica. The basic course, SSS-101 is a 2 day, 1 night, sailing and learning trip. This sailing course is designed for individuals or groups with limited or no sailing skills or experience. The course is documented in our "Basic Sailing Manual" . The course objectives include:

The course is held aboard the S/V Shannon, a 52 foot, Cutter-rigged Sloop. We sail to one of two locations (depending on the weather conditions) and anchor for the night. There we review the days lessons, take a short test on the days subject material, have dinner and enjoy a night at a remote Costa Rican Bay. The following morning we continue sailing/teaching and practicing the objectives of the class. On the return trip, we take another test on the class material and arrive back at Flamingo Beach harbor at approximately 1800 hrs on the second day. Upon successful completion of the course, students will receive a “Certificate of Completion” for SSS-101.

PRICE: The cost of the Basic Sailing School (2 days and 1 night) is $750 per person - Discounts are available for 2 or more people (6 people maximum).

Features - Sailing Vessel (S/V) Shannon

Shannon is a CT-49, flush deck, center cockpit, 52 foot, cutter rigged sloop. Her calculated hull speed is 9.2 knots. She was designed by Kaufman and Ladd after they helped with the design of the Nautor Swan 53. The CT-49 is bassically a copy of the Swan but built in Taiwan. She is powered by an 80 hp Perkins diesel engine. Sail inventory includes a two ply 13oz main with 3 reef points, 4 headsails (150, 120, high cut yankee and a storm jib) We also have a staysail that we use in conjunction with the high cut yankee or storm jib during the Popagayo winds.

Shannon's galley has a 4 burner propane stove, two built in Ice boxes, and pressurized fresh water system. An aft cabin has a King sized bed and adjoining bathroom with shower. The salon includes a port side table that seats 5 to 6 people. The table drops down and makes a double bed. The starboard side has a setee that will sleep one person. Forward is a second bathroom without shower. The forepeak has been converted to a workshop and sail storage.

The Navigation station includes: VHF radio, Singleside band radio, GPS, Depthgauge, (Sextant also) CD based stereo system. We have full charts for the pacific from the USA to Panama. Shannon is a registered Costa Rican boat with a current Certificate of Navigation specifing "for passengers".
